And now to the races themselves...
Race #8: Zero Ave RR - March 29th
Saturday kicked off the Joe Hailey Memorial at Zero Ave. Run under
slightly warmer conditions than the first sub-zero offering a few
weeks previous, the pack sizes were larger and the average speed
faster: the B group finished 120km in 2hrs, 59 minutes, averaging
40kmh for the rolling course.

Race #9: Gloucester Crit - March 30th
It wouldn't be the Spring Series without at least one race where
the pack got soaking wet. And the rain came down hard and heavy
all day Sunday for the second day of the Joe Hailey Memorial. First
up was a fast, slick, and wet spin around the Gloucester Industrial
Park. The extremely fast course meant that all 3 groups would contest
a sprint finish, with no-one able to stay away for more than a lap
or two.

Race #10: River Road TT- March 30th
To add insult to injury, riders were asked to get dry and warm,
then a short while later, head down to River Road to compete in
the final event: a 12km time trial. With some tired legs still-soggy
clothes, participants were let off at 30 second intervals down the
pancake flat course, extending 6km out and 6km back. For a wet weekend
in March, there were some fast times, with many of the participants
clocking times with average speeds well over 40kmh.
Race #7: Gloucester Crit - March 23rd, 2003
What threatened to be a soggy ride around the Gloucester Industrial
Park wound up being quite dry after all, as the 7th Spring Series
event took place on Sunday March 23rd. Riders were treated to a
pancake flat circuit course; a definite change from the previous
days rollers.

Race #6: Aldergrove Crossing RR - March 22nd,
2003
Another weekend and another challenging course at the Devo/Escape
Velocity Spring Series. A new addition, the Aldergrove Crossing
RR course proved to be a lot tougher than expected. Add a very stiff
wind and long distances and you've got the making of a war of attrition
on the road.
Roughly 50 riders in the A Group started and only 7 would finish
the day and the 140km total distance. Likewise, in the B Group,
a pack of roughly 10 riders were all that was left by the end of
the race. A

Race #5: Armstrong RR - March 16th, 2003
A long, winding hill and a stiff crosswind characterized the racing
Sunday at the infamous Armstrong Hill Spring Series course. In the
A Group, Canadian National team and recent Tour of Langkawi participant
Cory Lange (ACBB/Marco Polo) rolled away from the pack and his breakaway
companions to solo in on the challenging course. Resident road-race
hardman and initial breakaway rider Sean Dawson (Trek VW) took second.
The A Group pack also played host to mountain bikers Carter Hovey
and Ricky Federau, along with several other athletes over from the
PacificSport centre in Victoria.
In the B Group race, the pack stayed together until the last lap,
with hard riding coming from the Campione team characterizing the
final few times up the Armstrong hill. Winner of the first race
of the series, Carey Squires (Campione), attacked hard on the the
final climb up Armstrong and managed to get a good break on the
pack, but would be brought back with only a few metres left to go
by a charging Philip Burgess (La Bicicletta). Burgess held off Allan
Prazsky (Trek VW) and Gordon Ross (Escape Velocity) in the final
sprint across the line.

Race #4: River Rd Circuit - March 15th, 2003
The sun was out and the temperature was warm (finally) for the
Saturday River Road circuit race in Langley. A stiff wind was blowing
from the south east across the course, making the nearly pancake
flat course a bit more technical than the first race of the series
held 2 weeks prior.
In the A Group, a few major breakaways sent riders off into the
wind for an adventure. The first group contained Dylan Sebel (CDS-Kenwood),
Cory Lange (ACBB), Ricky Federau (Gears racing), Carter Hovie (Bianchi)
and Matt Usborne (Symmetrics) but would be brought back before the
half-way mark. Then Cory Lange and Scott Goguen (Symmetrics Cycling)
went out for a 3 lap break, but also came back with 6 to go. Finally
it was Ken Johnson (Escape Velocity) and Matt Usborne (Symmetrics
Cycling) that made a break stick, with 3 to go. The two riders managed
to hold off the pack, with Johnson coming around Usborne at the
line in a somewhat controversial move that looked to have Usborne
winning a non-contested sprint.
In the B Group, the tandem duo of Scott Laliberte and Gene Della
Siega rolled off the front of the pack with 10 laps remaining (60km)
and were joined by riders Gordon Ross (Escape Velocity), David Neubeck
(RunningShoes.com), David Jenkins, World Masters mountain bike medalist
Tony Routely (Rocky Mountain Bicycles), and Andy George with 9 to
go. The group of 6 then put over 3 minutes into the B Group pack
over the next 4 laps. The break stayed away in the wind, leaving
the race to the final sprint, instigated by Neubeck with a big attack
just prior to the final corner. Ross covered and managed to hold
off a charging Routely and Jenkins at the line for his second series
win.

Race #3: Bradner RR - March 9th, 2003: CANCELLED
DUE TO SNOW
Race #2: Zero Ave RR - March 8th, 2003
The second of 10 scheduled Spring Series races took place on Saturday
March 8th in Langley, BC. The 8km course took riders through rolling
farmlands and along Zero Ave, the road that runs parallel with the
Canada/USA border. Temperature was near freezing, with some leftover
snow and ice on the shoulder, and a cold wind seemed to be present
throughout the circuit. A smaller group of riders were out, after
last week's showing of 120+, with approximately 35 A's, 35 B's and
20 C's.
The racing was characterized by breakaways for both the A and
B groups, thanks to the rolling nature of the course and the cold
winds. In the 120km A Group race, a break including Rick Minichiello,
Dylan Sebel, Andreas Hestler, Eric Harvey, Chris Barth, and Min
Van Velzen got away with several laps to go. The group then shattered
into smaller pieces in the remaining laps, with Minichiello, Sebel,
and Hestler riding the last 2 laps together, Harvey and Barth coming
in together and Van Velzen returning to finish the pack. Minichiello
took the sprint with room to spare over Sebel and pro mountain biker
Hestler rolled across in third.
The 80km B Group race saw a small, two man break away roll off
the front with 4 laps to go. Those two riders were joined by Gordon
Ross and Eric Van Veen on the next lap, who eventually dropped the
original two with one lap remaining. Ross and Van Veen held on for
the win with the pack hot on their heels, with Ross outsprinting
Van Veen in the two-up sprint. Gavin Forsyth took the pack sprint.

Race #1: River Road Circuit - March 2nd, 2003
Roughly 120 riders came out to brave the drizzle of Fort Langley
and the kickoff race of the season. The A Group had the largest
turnout of the 3 groups with 60+ riders, the B Group had 40+ and
the C Group had a respectable 20+, many of whom were novice first-time
racers.
Sprint finishes were found in all 3 races, with a fast, slightly
uphill finish being won by Scott Goguen in the A Group, Carey Squires
in the B Group, and Jesse Tinker in the C's.
