In the face of dire weather forecasts, well over 100 riders (and just as important, enough volunteers) turned out for the first road race of 2012, River Road.

The rain held off and all races were essentially dry, but the wind was very present, and defined the races.

In the Novice group, 10 brave riders turned out, and it was Andrew Pickell at the finish line, with Jonathan Vanpopta and David Wilkins following him home.

The 45 C's were led home by Clint Ruck, with Gary Bone and John Bromlie rounding out the podium.

The B group, pushed around by serious wind on two legs of the course, a small break managed to escape the pack for most of the second half of the race. After some overly eventful closing laps, Adrian Lawson took the win over Emil Marcetta, with dEVo's own Aidan Caves rounding out the podium.

The A group was relatively small, with 25 starters, but a first-lap break got away and stayed away, and by the end of a long day in the saddle, the pack was as shattered as it could be, with relatively few finishers and no real peloton remaining. Greg Christian, a new pickup for Garneau Evolution this year, soloed to victory with minutes to spare. His GE teammate Jeff Werner postponed cracking for long enough to roll home second, also solo. Erik Mulder took 4th for the pink team, with Mike Sidic (H&R Block) forming the meat in the GE sandwich.

Next Sunday, the racing heads to Aldergrove Long, an extended version of the classic 0 Ave course featuring a short, sharp climb right before the finish line.
